La Tomatina (Buñol)
The last Wednesday of August, this town of Valencia ends its patron saint festivities with its traditional Tomatina which starts at eleven o'clock in the morning with a “carcasa” and ends one hour later with another one. The night before La Tomatina, the streets of Buñol are filled with tomatoes and before the battle a “cucaña”, covered with soap and at the end of which a ham is placed, is raised. It is estimated that every year about 150,000 tomatoes are distributed among the 20,000 participants from all over the world. This celebration dates back to the year 1945, when with the passage of a parade of giants and big-heads, those who have not been able to take part started a battle throwing vegetables. Since then, the number of participants has been growing until it was declared Festivity of International Tourist Interest by the General Secretariat for Tourism in 2002.
