Virgin of Meritxell National Festivity
Every 8th September, the Principality of Andorra celebrates its National Festivity in honour of the Virgin of Meritxell. The central acts take place at the Sanctuary of Meritxell, located in the parish of Canillo, where thousands of people go on a pilgrimage from early in the morning.
The original temple burnt down in a fire in 1972. The present one, opened in 1976, is the work of the architect Ricardo Bofill. Inside, we can find a copy of the Romanesque image of the virgin disappeared in the fire as well as a small museum with the remains of the original church. The Sanctuary is also composed of a royal road and a transept.
