Main Festivity of Vilafranca
The Main Festivity of Vilafranca del Penedès, declared Festivity of National Interest by the Generalitat, is one of the festivities with more visitors in Catalonia and it is also one of the most peculiar festivities. The reason for this, among other things, is that since its beginning during the XVII century, it has not suffered wide variations.
A curious custom is that the Local Government chooses five people that will be the “administrators” and they will also be in charge of looking for more economic resources. One of the tasks that will be assigned to them is to go for two days from house to house selling the programme of the festivity as well as an image of the saint.
Another ritual which is developed in the same way since the year 1963 is the opening speech, which is offered each 28th August after the song of the Gozos. From then on, the streets and squares become stage, festivity, colour and fun; they are full of giants, big-heads, parades, the Eagle, the Dragon, castellers, popular groups, shawns and people, a lot of people.
The main day is 30th, day of St. Felix, patron saint of the city. The festivity continues day and night until a dance and an impressive display of fireworks put an end to five days of festivities until next year.
