The Way of the North (Irun) - The Way of St. James

The Way of the North is deeply linked to the Cantabrian sea and connects Santiago de Compostela with important Spanish towns such as San Sebastian, Bilbao, Santander and Gijon. Although, technically The Way of the North begins at Santiago's Bridge in Hendaya (frontier area with France), Irun is the place where it traditionally begins for a lot of pilgrims. Also known as Cantabrian Route or High Route, the Way of the North is considered an extension of the Soulac Route or of the Aquitaine Coast in France, which crosses the Silver Coast to link up to Irun.

In Asturias, the Way of the North is divided into two different routes. Pilgrims can choose between continuing to Oviedo in order to join themselves to the Primitive Way, which is the oldest route of all, or continuing along the coast up to Ribadeo, to leave the littoral and continue along Galician towns such as Mondoñedo, Villalba or Sobrado dos Monxes. Both itineraries get together again in the town of Arzua, in A Coruña.

The Way of the North goes from Irun along 800 km which are traditionally divided into 32 stages (on foot) in which you will be able to enjoy the most beautiful natural, mountainous and maritime settings as well as the hospitality of their people.
